Welcome to this guide on how to recode videos for your S//E phone using NERO recode 2.
This guide will walk you through the actual conversion process - focusing on optimal quality rather than smallest file size. This guide will teach you how to make the highest quality videos possible on K750 - not on how to get most videos on the phones.
Before starting the guide - here are some general info you need to know:
Maximum and optimal screen resolution for w810i videos are 176×144 pixels.
Aspect ratio of video should be 1.21
(actually it is 176/144=1.2222 - but the viewable are of the media player is 1.21 so to completely fill the viewable area of K750 it needs to be 1.21)
Maximum combined bit rate of Video and Audio should be 264 kbps for fluent playback with no skipping or synch problems- others may disagree, but this is my guide ![]()
Optimum frames pr second are 15 fps - others may disagree, but this is my guide ![]()
K750 are capable of playing both .3gp and .mp4 Videos - which is rather unique amongst mobile phones today.
.3gp and .mp4 are containers that can contain both a H.263 video stream and an AMR audio stream, or a Mpeg4 video stream and a AAC audio stream H.263 video and AMR audio are lower quality codec’s designed for low bandwidth while Mpeg4 and AAC audio are high quality codec’s designed for high bandwidth - since K750 plays both we want to encode using Mpeg4 and AAC - and this is where NERO recode 2 enters the scene.
At the moment NERO delivers the highest quality Mpeg4 and AAC codec’s on the market - and with NERO recode 2 they also supply one of the best and simplest encoding applications on the market today.
Now on to the guide Smiley
1. Start the application - and select Recode DVDs and Videos to Nero Digital
2. Under Nero Digital Profile - select Mobile and uncheck the Fit to target selection box - then press Import Titles and browse to select the source video (or encrypted DVD) you want to recode
3. Set the Video Quality slider as close to 200 Kbps as possible
200kbps is maximum recommended videobitrate, for smaller file sizes still with acceptable quality set bit rate between 130-150 kbps
4. Nero automatically select the best audio for your video - but you can check by pressing the Audio Settings button, and you will get this picture showing that it will encode in AAC LC stereo, 40kbit/s, 22050Hz - which is ok for normal use, you can select custom profile and select higher bit rate if you want better sound, for instance 64kbit/S, 32000Hz, but don’t go higher or the finished video will stutter during playback. If you do want to go higher on audio quality then you have to lower the video bit rate to keep below 264kbps combined bit rate.
5. After checking the audio we want to set up Video - go back to 3. And press the Video button to get to this picture. Leave the default Deinterlace setting of Disable as is.
6. Select the Crop tab - check the Custom Crop and press the Adjust button
7. Now we want to crop the video to 1. Have the correct aspect ratio to enable full screen playback and 2. Remove any unwanted black portions of the source video (we don’t want the encoder wasting valuable bits encoding black bars). Click and drag the crop bars to view the cropped result and notice the number of pixels on the right - these you crop out and are important when calculating the needed aspect ratio. Remember we wanted to go to 176×144pixels with aspect ratio 1.21 - if the source video is for instance 720×576 we need to make sure that we crop the correct number of pixels on all sides. We start out deciding to crop out 4 pixels top and 0 pixels bottom - now to calculate what we need to crop from the sides we first calculate new horizontal resolution 576-4-0=572, and then determine needed vertical resolution by 572*1.21=692. Since the original video was 720 vertical resolutions we need to crop 720-692=28 pixels total (for instance 18 pixels on one side and 10 on the other as in this example). Note that when calculating horizontal and vertical resolution after crop all numbers must be dividable by 2. When done press OK
8. This is how it looks after you’ve set the crop settings - now press the Resize tab
9. If you cropped correctly (with correct aspect ratio of 1.21) it will automatically set resolution at 176×144. Remember to keep the Letterboxing option checked - this will ensure that aspect ratio is kept and display size is not altered. When done press the OK button.
10. Under Burn options select your target folder
11. Under Nero Digital Settings check the expert mode box and select High quality 2-pass, and extra quality under Quality/speed setting, set the rest of the setting EXACTLY as shown in the following screenshots, very important are the last screenshot where minimum key frame interval is set to 50 instead of default 5. If you do not change minimum key frame interval from 5 to 50, then it will make a key frame for every 5th frame and this will make your video stutter during playback at these high bit rates.
12. The encoding starts and in a very short time the video will be done Smiley
14. After encoding your video - check that everything went well and quality is fine by playing back the video using the free Operable x4 live player (freely downloadable from mpegable.com)
15. Select file, Movie Info to check that the movie came out with the settings you wanted - Notice total bit rate, notice Video size, Display size, Frame Rate and Video Bit rate and notice the Audio AAC channels, sample rate, sample depth and total bit rate. Everything fits to the desired numbers we wanted and we know that this video will play smoothly with optimum video and sound quality on our K750 using as much of the screen as possible.
Happy encoding Smiley
